ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES AND REQUIREMENTS
FOR SHORT-TERM STUDIES SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
FOR FOREIGN TEACHERS TEACHING CHINESE

The Short-term Studies Scholarship Program for Foreign Teachers Teaching Chinese is full scholarship. It aims at sponsoring the Chinese language teachers from abroad to come to China to take the short-term courses so as to improve their techniques of teaching Chinese language, facilitating the exchange and cooperation in the field of Chinese language teaching of the scholars from the world and enhancing the exchange and friendship between the Chinese people and people from all over the world. The China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as the CSC) takes charge of the applications for and management of this scholarship.
1. The duration of the scholarship:
The duration of the scholarship covers the period of 4 weeks of classroom instruction.
2. The details of the scholarship
1). Full scholarship: tuition These three are appropriated to the
emergency medical care institution
lodging
living allowance: Candidates receive a lump-sum of CNY 2000 yuan
2). Teaching tour outside Beijing:
After the classroom instruction, the institution will organize a two-week teaching tour. The institution will bear the expenses of teachersĄŻ transportation, lodging and an amount of food subsidy of CNY 600 Yuan (If it is inadequate to cover the food, the candidates themselves shall cover the rest).
3. Candidates shall bear their own expenses for international trip.
3. The time and institution of the program
Time of classroom instruction: July 10th to August 7th, 2001
Teaching tour outside Beijing: August 8th to August 21st, 2001
Institution: Beijing Language and Culture University, Beijing Normal University
4. Qualifications of the applicants:
Applicants must:
a). be of non-Chinese nationality, be healthy and under the age of 55.
b). be engaged in teaching Chinese for three consecutive years and hold the teaching post at the present.
c). have obtained bachelorĄŻs degree.
5. Submission of application materials
1). Qualified applicants shall fill out the Application Form for Short-term Studies Scholarship Program for Foreign Teachers Teaching Chinese (one original, one photocopy). Please ask for the Application Form for Short-term Studies Scholarship Program for Foreign Teachers Teaching Chinese from the Chinese embassy (consulate).
2). Submission of the following materials
a. highest diploma (notarized photocopy)
b. one or two letters of recommendation
Applicants shall submit the above application materials to the Chinese embassy (consulate) which will transfer them to the CSC by April 30th 2001.
6. The approval of the scholarship and the handling of visa to China
1). After processed by the CSC and enrolled by the institution, the CSC will, by June 15th 2001, send the Instrument of Ratification of the Short-term Studies Scholarship Program for Foreign Teachers Teaching Chinese, the Admission Notice and Visa Application for Foreigners Wishing to Study China (JW201) to the Chinese embassy (consulate) which will transfer the above documents to the candidates.
2). Scholarship holders shall bear general passport, together with the above documents, to apply to the Chinese embassy (consulate) for the F-visa to China and register at the institution at the set time.
7. The course arrangement and the teaching tour
1). Phonetics of Chinese as a second and foreign language, Grammar and Morphology and their teaching methods, the teaching of oral Chinese, listening comprehension, and reading comprehension, the theory and approach of classroom Chinese teaching, senior courses for Chinese, lectures on Chinese culture, teaching practice.
